‘Roni’ is the word for raccoon in the language of Iroquois, the native people of the northeast USA. Raccoons are typically found in the Adirondack Mountains region where Lake Placid is situated.

Donald F. Moss (1920-2010) was the designer of ‘Roni’ and initially focused only on the face of the animal, using simple lines and the colours of the Games’ emblem. He later designed the full-body mascot practicing different Olympic winter sports.

To promote the Games, the Organising Committee used real raccoons from a local zoo, which were transferred to New York to appear on national television.
