The International Olympic Committee recognises this programme cover of the London 1908 Olympics as the official poster for the Games.
The 1908 Games were originally scheduled to be held in Rome. Following the 1906 eruption of Mount Vesuvius that devastated Naples, the Games were relocated to London.
Created by celebrated portraitist Arthur Stockdale Cope (1857–1940), the poster shows a high jumper in the Stadium at Shepherd’s Bush. In the background is the swimming pool and the cinder running track of the stadium.
