Following an unsuccessful contest for the poster of the Munich 1972 Olympics, the Organising Committee commissioned Otl Aicher (1922-1991), the designer of the Games emblem, to create the official poster. The composition had to include the famous tent-shaped roof of the Olympic arena by German architect Frei Otto (1925-2015). Aicher also added the Olympic Tower, which is still the tallest building in Munich.
The poster was based on a photograph, the colours of which were adjusted to correspond to the visual identity of the Games. The same technique was used for the twenty-one posters corresponding to the sports included in the Olympic programme
